There’s something undeniably special about the golden hour — that soft, glowing light just after sunrise or before sunset that makes every photo look dreamlike. Whether you’re planning a couple photoshoot, family session, or maternity shoot, the golden hour offers a warmth and atmosphere that simply can’t be replicated indoors or under midday light.
Our collective of photographers loves working with this natural light. It brings out authentic emotion, highlights natural beauty, and creates timeless images that feel alive.
What Makes Golden Hour So Special
The golden hour happens twice a day — shortly after sunrise and shortly before sunset — when the sun is low on the horizon. The light is softer, warmer, and more flattering.
Instead of harsh shadows or strong contrasts, everything is bathed in a natural golden glow that enhances skin tones and gives photos a romantic, cinematic quality.
It’s the perfect time for outdoor photography, whether that’s in open fields, near the river, or even in your own garden.
Finding the Perfect Spot for Your Session
Some clients come to us with a clear vision and a special place in mind — maybe a meaningful park, a forest walk, or a hidden corner that tells part of their story. We love that.
But if you’re not sure where to go, don’t worry — we also know beautiful natural spots all around Dendermonde. From riverside paths and quiet meadows to tree-lined roads and old bridges, there are countless locations that look magical during golden hour.
We’re also happy to travel to other locations based on your ideas and preferences. Just note that for shoots outside the Dendermonde area, there may be a small additional cost for travel — but the result is always worth it if the location holds special meaning to you.
Timing and the Time of Year
One of the keys to a perfect golden hour photoshoot is understanding that the exact time of golden hour changes throughout the year.
Season | Sunrise Golden Hour | Sunset Golden Hour | Notes |
Winter (Dec–Feb) | 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. | 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. | Short days, cool light, often soft and misty. |
Spring (Mar–May) | 6:30 – 8:00 a.m. | 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. | Great balance of light and temperature. |
Summer (Jun–Aug) | 5:30 – 7:00 a.m. | 8:45 – 10:00 p.m. | Warmest light, long evenings — ideal for outdoor sessions. |
Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 7:00 – 8:30 a.m. | 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. | Rich, golden tones with colorful foliage. |
This is why flexibility is key. We’ll plan your session together, taking into account your schedule, comfort, and the season. Sometimes, we may even adjust the time slightly on the day of the shoot depending on the weather or cloud cover — because natural light can change quickly, and we always want to capture it at its best.
The Weather Factor: Staying Flexible
Belgian weather loves surprises. One moment, the sky is glowing gold; the next, it’s covered in soft clouds. But that’s part of the beauty of natural light photography — it’s alive and unpredictable.
If the forecast changes, we can easily reschedule your shoot to another day or adjust the timing to catch a different light moment. Our goal is always to make sure you have the most flattering and enjoyable experience possible.
Even cloudy evenings can produce stunning, diffused light that adds mood and softness to your portraits — so there’s no such thing as “bad” light, only different kinds of beautiful.
Tips to Make the Most of Your Golden Hour Photoshoot
A few simple ideas can make your session even more magical:
Arrive a little early. Golden hour passes quickly — being ready on time helps us make the most of every minute.
Dress in light, neutral tones. Earthy or soft colors complement the warmth of the light.
Bring layers. Especially in spring or autumn, the temperature can drop as the sun sets.
Trust the process. Sometimes, the best shots come from spontaneous moments as the light changes.
